My Story

Wedge Family 7.jpg

Hey friends, and welcome to Blooming DIY-er!  My name is Dale, the person behind this little piece of the world wide web.  If any of you would have ever asked me if I would be starting my own blog a few years ago, I probably would have laughed and said absolutely not, no WAY!

In 2017, I began my home decor and DIY-ing journey online.  I started my very own Instagram account that focused on my love for home decorating and began to share my own home do-it-yourself projects.  It was a scary step, but it was truly the best decision I ever made.

As a typical introverted person, with no desire for attention, the fear of putting myself out there held me back in certain aspects of my life.  One day I decided to try and see what could happen if I took a chance and see where this my passion of mine could take me.  So, here I am a now …an official blogger, gulp!   This is an exciting journey to be on now and let me just say that I may not be on here all the time like some bloggers...life gets busy you guys and my family and fur babies will always come first.  When I am here though, it's a total creative escape for me!  I love to continually provide inspiring projects and ways to show people how to love their homes more and more.

Speaking of my family, let me introduce you to my them!  I’ve been married to my husband, Curtis, for 12 years now and he is the handyman behind most of my projects. Together, we have a nine-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son and two wiener dogs!  We moved our family to Calgary Alberta, in 2015.

During our house search, we looked at 30 houses in two days! Crazy right!?  We looked in both old and new neighbourhoods.  We decided to forgo the temptation of buying a shiny new home and opt for an older 90’s home, filled with mature pine trees and great schools.  Here we found our home, a four-bedroom, two-story, to raise our family in.

When we first walked into this house all I saw was potential!  I saw past the dark, dated rooms, the Dynasty (remember that show!?) chandeliers, orangey oak trim and cabinets evvvverywhere, the brass hardware, and popcorn ceilings. Instead, I saw a great layout, a main floor office, a family den, four upstairs bedrooms, and my dream of a separate dining room (which hardly gets used, but I will get to that later).

So we were excited to see what we could do on a frugal budget and with our own hands to bring it into the 21st century.

My passion for interior decorating and refinishing furniture began a few years ago when I became a stay at home mom. I was one of those moms binge-watching HGTV while looking around at our own home and wondering what I could do to bring some personality to it.

I bought my first vintage dresser without a clue of what to do or where to begin.  I gave that piece a makeover, from a dingy yellow to a refreshing shade of teal for my daughter’s bedroom.  That was when I fell in love with home decorating!  I fell in love with the instant gratification of seeing what some hard work, an inexpensive can of paint and some elbow grease could do!

I bought more second-hand, unwanted furniture giving them all makeovers to fit the style of our home, finding true fun in the creative therapy.  I managed to furnish most of our home with second-hand pieces, sometimes to my husband’s dismay at the beginning, but now he's always on board with all my crazy ideas, and I feel so lucky to have such a supportive husband.

Which is why Curtis will be getting so much of credit in this blog, as all of his handy work is what makes the majority of our DIY-ing projects come to life. I always say, he does the hard work and I just get to make it all look pretty!

So, with all this being said guys, my goal is to hopefully inspire you to love the spaces you live in.  I want you to walk into your home, whether it be a rental, your parents’ basement, your apartment, or first family home–whatever place you live in, I just want you to love it and feel happy by your beautiful surroundings. I believe you should feel good in your home, and not have the instant feeling of stress or ‘ick’ (it’s a pretty crummy feeling right?)

I want to take that yucky feeling away and hopefully give you some ideas to help you decorate your spaces with easy DIY solutions that are achievable and affordable!  As a disclaimer, people have asked me if I’m an interior designer and, the truth is I’m not!  I did go to a local college here in Calgary to do the Home Staging program which was so much fun, but other than that I didn't do any other formal training for home design, but that has never stopped me from going forward with my dreams.  I know I have a passion for home interiors and I can't wait to share that with you guys!

So, join me on this new adventure and please never hesitate to reach out.  I love speaking with all of you and answering your questions.  Thanks again for being here, taking time out of your busy day to share in our love for home decorating.  I'm truly grateful you stopped by.

Love,

Dale xo
